Ten years pass and Slayers seem to be closer to ridding the world of Dragons. Their hold on the world swindling greatly each day and you were proud to be one of the Slayers.

You recently graduated a year ago and were now a full pledged Slayer and the first woman as well. It was one of the proudest days of your life as you received your armor from the elder Slayers, standing in front of all the Slayers. You only wished your father and mother could see you right now.

But then something happened. A Slayer, one of your own, betrayed your order and was followed by many others. They broke their vows and allied themselves with the dragons, turning the tide of many battles.

They called themselves Dragon Knights and were now a bigger threat than the dragons. You felt nothing but hate for these traitors and hoped that you can soon join the battles and put them in their place.

“________.” You guardian called you as he returned to your home. You were sharpening your new sword and looked up at him. You were always grateful that he took you in after your parents were killed. He walked over to the table and dropped a bag, sitting down with a heavy sigh.

“Is something the matter?” You asked, examining your sword before setting it down, looking at him.

“We lost a few more Slayers...” He mumbled, removing his helmet. His hair was graying and there were distinct lines on his face. He didn't look like he did when he was younger anymore.

You felt anger bubbling through your blood as you continued sharpening your blade till it could cut on touch. “By or to the Knights...?”

“Both...” He said softly, running his thick fingers through his hair. “Many respected Slayers turned sides so it's a given that many would follow...”

You both remained silent for the rest of the day. There were no words to express either of your feelings.

A few days later, you were finally sent to vanquish a dragon that had been spotted. Slayers had to change their methods so one would be sent before hand to check for any Knights or Dragons before reinforcements came. They usually pick the most agile Slayers to scout out and hold down the fort.

The Dragon was spotted near the village closest to your old home. You felt old memories flowing through your mind but you forcibly pushed them back, knowing this was not the time for nostalgia.

You dismounted your horse and shooed it away, knowing it would return to the Slayers. You crouched down and quickly scanned the area. The village was abandoned, not a soul in sight but you were cautious. You never knew if a Dragon Knight lurked in the darkness. They knew the Slayer methods so you had to keep on your toes.

You quietly moved through the town, tracking for any traces of the dragon but there were none to be found. You moved through buildings and the old market place but not a trace of a large creature.

But there was signs of some activity. You found a burned out campfire in one of the buildings and gently touched it. It recently burned out, and there were signs that someone had slept here. You take some time to find the trail and follow it quickly.

You felt more and more memories flooding through your mind as you were entering a familiar forest. They were becoming harder and harder to push back and tears start to run down your cheeks. You try to blink them away but they persisted. You finally reach a clear and you felt numb inside. The grass had grown but your knew where you were.

The small cottage in the middle of a large field, forest surrounding it as if protecting it. It was your old home. Your feet move by themselves and you began to walk towards the barn where you spent a lot of your childhood.

You entered the forest and avoid the thorns that had became over grown and covered the ground. You see the barn and you couldn't help but smile. Other than the vines wrapping themselves around, it hadn't changed at all. Your smile disappeared though as you notice the barn door was opened, vines laying on the floor as if someone ripped them off.

You unsheathe your blade and crouched down to the ground, slowly moving to the side of the building. You slowly peered through the side window, looking for any sign of life. You heard soft breathing to the side, like someone was asleep. You tried to get a look to see who it was but he was too much to the side and you did not want to stick your head in. You decided to move around to the front and enter.

You slowly crept into the barn, blade at ready. You stood on the spot where you had many years ago when your father had brought that dragon home. You looked to the old haystack and you steadied yourself, calming your breathing.

A man laid on his back, his hands behind his head and his feet crossed at the ankles. He was sleeping comfortably on the haystack, a small smirk on his lips. His armor resembled that of Slayers but it had added accessories. His silver hair shown under the light and his skin was very fair, not a mark on him.

He looked familiar as you crept forward, your sword aimed to him. It was hard to point it out but you had seen him before. You hold in a gasp as you remember him. He was the squire that had came to your home the day of the attack. You had seen him around the barracks as well but you two had never spoken before.

As you recalled the events of that day, you failed to notice that his ruby red eyes had shot open and were now staring at you.

“Are you going to run me through?” He spoke, raising a brow. He looked confident but you can see some cold sweat run down the side of his face.

You realized he was awake and held firmly on your sword, glaring at him with your fiery (e/c) eyes. “Who are you and why are you here?” You growled at him, bracing yourself.

“Oh, me? I'm the awesome Gilbert! I'm surprised you've never heard of me!” He boasted, smirking to you as he slowly sat up but stopped as you held your weapon more threateningly. “And why the awesome me is here is because...” He stopped, looking at your armor and forced a nervous chuckle. “A Slayer? There are women Slayers now?”

“Answer my question...” You demanded, now holding your blade dangerously close to his neck. Before he could answer, you finally take notice of his glowing red eyes and gasp, hissing, “Traitor! You're a Dragon Knight!”

He furrows his brows and says, defensively, “Yeah? I am a Dragon Knight and it's awesome! A Slayer wouldn't understand!”

“I should run you through where you lay!” You growled, pressing the cold steel to his neck, drawing some blood.

Gilbert winces but smirks at you, more sweat rolling down his skin. “Well, go ahead.” You stare in his eyes, angry at first but as you continued to look into them, your anger slowly starts to fade away now being replaced with sadness. Gilbert notices this and his smirk disappears. He gently pushes your blade away from his neck and you don't resist. “______.” He whispers, pulling you into an embrace. You gasp in shock as you lay on him, his arms wrapped around you tightly, though was a little difficult with the armor you both had on.

“H-how did you...?” You asked, quickly pushing against him and backing away, your (e/c) eyes widen.

Gilbert smiles gently and point to where you stood. “You stood around there when you first met him.” He laughs, almost like a hiss. “You were so small, holding a lantern almost as big as you were!”

“How-?”

“You were scared of him at first, but your father was there to protect you.” Gilbert slowly got up, brushing some hay off his armor. “You took care of him.” You stared at the Dragon Knight, speechless, as he began to walk outside. He leans in the doorway and looks out to the field in the distance.

“You two were playing on the hill. I didn't know you were there when we were attacked by his father.” Gilbert continued, not turning to look at you.

“His Father?” You move next to Gilbert and stare at him, as if searching for an answer. “The Dragon's father attacked us?”

Gilbert turned his head to you, slowly turning his body as well to lean his back on the doorway. He looked sad and even confused. “He didn't mean to leave you and he didn't mean for your father to die for a misunderstanding.”

“Misunderstanding?” You growled, glaring at Gilbert.

“Hey! Don't glare at me!” Gilbert said, raising his hand up defensively. “That's how he felt.”

“And how would you know how the dragon felt?” You growled, grabbing under his breast plate and holding him aggressively, glaring at him.

“You... Don't know anything about Dragon Knights do you?” Gilbert said, a small smirk on his lips. Seeing as your anger was starting to return, he took it as a yes. “Slayers have been fighting us for almost a year and you never knew what we were?”

“Then what are you?!” You bark at him, slamming him against the doorway but you knew it didn't hurt him.

“Have you ever wondered why we are never really with any Dragons? Haven't you ever wondered why Knights have been around more often than Dragons?” Gilbert asked, pushing your hands away from him. You remained silent so he continued. “Not many pure dragons exist anymore.”

“Pure dragons?” This causes Gilbert to smirk and let out his unique laugh.

“The Dragon Knights are the Dragons now. We have all the powers of the Dragons,” His smirk disappears as he stares into your surprised eyes. “But that also comes with their memories.”

You take a moment to registered what this man was saying to you. You gasp, stepping away from him, your (e/c) eyes widen in shock. “T-then you-”

Gilbert steps outside in a clearing, his back to you. He remained silent for a moment before smirking over his shoulder at you. “Watch this.”

Within seconds, bright white flames engulfed him from head to toe, emitting a bright flash of light. You wince and look away from the light before squinting back towards where Gilbert had stood. In his place was a large silver dragon, its leathery wings open wide to his side as it raised it's long neck into the sky, it's glowing red eyes watching you curiously.

You steps back, instinctively holding up your sword to it but the dragon did not move, seeing in your eyes that it was just an instinct and you were not going to follow through with it. You stare up at the dragon, examining all its features. You recognize them as your heart sunk.

It was the dragon you spent much of your childhood raising.

“I became a Dragon Knight with him.” Gilbert's voice emitted from the dragon, his eyes grinning. He takes a step towards you, lowering his head to your level. “He always felt guilty for what had happened to you and your family.”

You felt your heart soften a bit but you steeled yourself, clenching your teeth together. You raise your sword to him, growling. “He abandoned us without even a glance! Because of him my parents and good slayers are dead!”

The dragon takes a step back as you had lifted the sword threateningly at him but doesn't attempt to run. He looks from the glistening blade to you, searching your (e/c) eyes. His large chest expands as he takes a deep breath, closing his ruby eyes.

“If you want to kill us...” He hesitates before continuing. “Then go ahead, run us through...”

Gilbert acted calm and collected about it but you knew he was scared of dying, but you found it odd that he had shown you his dragon form and even explained a thing or two about Dragon Knights, your sworn enemies.

You let out a soft sigh as the blade was lowered to the ground. Gilbert's eyes creep open, watching as the sword was no longer pointing at him.

You felt tears threaten to trail down your (color) skin as your voice came out shaky. “Did he not care for us..? After everything we did for him?”

Gilbert remained silent for a moment before craning his neck towards you. He gently nuzzles his nose against you, the silver dragon making a soft moaning noise, almost like a whine. You were taken back at first, in fear that he would take your life in one giant bite but as he continued to nuzzle against you, your body slowly began to relax soon allowing yourself to drag your armored hand over his muzzle. You were curious about the feel of the dragon's skin and removed the armor gauntlet, dropping them to the ground as you resumed petting him.

The dragon makes a sort of hissing noise, similar to that like his laugh. He gently nudges against your hands as he closes his eyes and whispers to you. “He loved your family very much.” Gilbert opens his eye, staring into yours for a moment. “He loved you most of all. And having all these memories of you playing, laughing, crying, just always being there...” In another flash of light, you jerk your hands away to cover your eyes as you winced but as you did so, you felt an armored hand grab your wrist. Your eyes fly open to see Gilbert back as a human, standing so close in front of you.

“Just having these memories...” He says, pulling you into a tight embrace. “I fell in love with you as well...” He whispered.

You stood there in shock as his arms were wrapped securely around your waist. You can smell the hay from the barn on his pale skin and feel his soft silver hair brushing against your face. You felt at ease being in his arms.

Before you could react, your eyes widen as you hear the faint sounds of horses in the distance but you knew they were closer than they sounded. Slayers.

Gilbert heard them as well because his head rose from your shoulder and turned towards the noise. You knew he was the enemy and you were sworn to kill him but you went against your duty.

You pushed him away, turning towards the sound of Slayers. “Hurry, you have to go now.”

There was a brief moment of silence before you felt a large hand on your shoulder and lips against your cheek. “Thank you.” Gilbert whispered, flashing you a smile before bolting away for safety.

You face heated up as your placed your bare hand on your cheek. You smiled to yourself but it quickly disappeared as a group of Slayers rode up through the forest to you. Their horses were silent compared to a normal horse, trained and breed for stealth.

One of the Slayers dismounts his horse as you reach down, grabbing your gauntlets. “What is the situation, ______?” He asked.

You calmly slipped on the gauntlets and said, glancing at the Slayer, “There was a dragon but it fled.” You turned to the Slayer, who obviously was a higher rank than you. You bowed to him. “I apologize for failing the mission...”

The Slayer remained silent for a moment before mounting on his stallion once more. “It is acceptable. Just make sure you understand to work harder next time.” You nod to him, hoping onto a horse they had brought for you.

As the men began to ride away, you take a quick glance back into the forest. You lingered for a moment before riding off with your fellow Slayers.

Gilbert watched you from a distance, far enough away that the Slayer would not be able to sense him. He smiles to himself, letting out a hiss like laugh before turning away and running, a bright flash of light enveloping him as he leaped into the air and beat his large leathery wings, taking off into the skies.
