"_____!" A voice called after you as you raced down the grassy hill till you reached the creek the flowed near your home. You leaped over it and softly rammed your body against a giant willow.

You raised you hands up in victory and cheered, "I win!" You pant, leaning against the tree as you wait for your friend.

A fairly large silver reptile bound down the hill, tumbling a bit. It splashed through the stream and flopped onto the grass in front of you.

"You never said it was a race!" The dragon groaned, hissing a little. Its tail swished back and forth in slight annoyance. You just giggle at the dragon, sticking out your tongue. It had been 5 years since the dragon came into your life. You were careful not to let your mother know, thanks with some help from your father and you knew that soon you will have to let the dragon go.

Even though you and your father were careful, some Slayers have been coming around constantly. You weren't sure what they wanted but your father seemed to handle them as you would hide with the dragon. They said Slayers can smell a dragon, maybe they were becoming suspicious of your father.

Your thoughts were halted as you heard the thundering sounds of horses and metal. "Stay here." You told the young dragon, who quickly hid under the loose roots of the tree as you jumped over the stream and crawled up the hill. You peeked through the long grass towards your small cottage home.

There, a group of armored men on horses were dismounting. Among them was a young boy, maybe a year older than you, following like a little chick behind one of the armored men. He had scruffy silver hair and donned a tunic you recognized as a uniform a Slayer's squire would have.

Your father exit from your home and stood in front of the men, full armor on. Your mother was behind him, keeping her eyes on the group of Slayers. There seemed to be some words being exchanged between the groups but you couldn't hear anything, you were too far away.

But what you did hear in the distance made your blood run cold.

There was a loud roar from the sky. The men instinctively unsheathed their weapons and ran from the house, searching the sky. A large, great white dragon flew above then, it's eyes were a fiery red, filled with anger and blood lust.

You only froze, staring in fear as it blew fire down onto the field, lighting the grass on fire. You can hear the shouts of the men, the fearful cries of the horses, and your mother's scream. You tightly shut your eyes and turned away from the fire. The sound of metal and the loud roar of the dragon rang through the air.

"_______?" You opened your eyes to see your dragon bounding up the hill, a confused look in its eyes.

"N-no! Stay there!" You commanded it, your voice shaking but it didn't listen. It crawled up to the top of the hill and looked over at the burning fields, its eyes wide.

You hesitantly turned back around to see what was happening.

The fire wasn't as bright as it had been, the men and large dragon were now visible. You watched in horror as the men fought with the dragon; blades, arrows, magic, anything the men could do. During the battle you saw your father yell at one of the men. He was the man the young boy was following. Within seconds, the man scooped up the young boy and ran off, hopping onto his horse which happily took them away from the battle.

You squint, trying to find your mother but you couldn't see her.

You heard your dragon squeak, rushing from the hill down through the field. "Wait!" You called after it, too afraid to move from your spot. It continued to run towards the large dragon. Your father sees the little reptile running towards them and rushes to it.

The large dragon saw the little one as well.

As your father reached the smaller dragon, trying to push him away, the large one bats it's large leathery wings towards the other men. They braced themselves, holding steady but were distracted for a moment. That was all the time the large dragon needed.

It clasps its large jaws around your father, and shakes him furiously. You wanted to scream, as you watched in horror as your father was shaken about like a rag doll but no sound came from your mouth. Tears started to pour down your cheeks as the dragon, still having a firm grip on your father, blew fire onto him.

The other men resumed their fight with the dragon as it tossed your father's body onto one of the Slayers, knocking them down. It swished its tail, knocking the men to the side as it looked down at the baby dragon.

You were in shock as it nuzzled against the large dragon. Rage started to boil inside you. Did it not care about your father? About what they had done for it all those years?

The great white dragon grabs the baby in its talon and beaten it's large wings, taking to the air. The Slayers shot magic and arrows at it but none made contact as it flew off, disappearing into the clouds.

You sat there, body shaking, as the Slayers started to relax but their movements were slow and fatigued. They seemed to be searching the area, gathering their equipment. One of the remaining men started to pick up bodies, carrying them over by the house. Including your father's limp armored body.

4 men were carried, including your father. Only 4 remained at the battle field.

Tears filled your eyes as you turned away, hugging your knees. You whimpered a little before bawling onto your knees, head resting on top of them. You felt your heart breaking into thousands of pieces, the once bright world seemed to have gotten darker and colder. That dragon, if it didn't run off your father may have been still alive. This never would have happened if your father never brought it back here. That large dragon must have been looking for it. How could that little one been so heartless? Your father risked his life to save it when other Slayers would have killed it on sight.

You hugged your knees tighter as the thought ran through your mind. 'I hate dragons...'

You weren't sure how long you sat on the hill, sobbing, but soon you felt a cold metal hand on your shoulder. You gasped, looking up at one of the Slayers, fulling armored. You could only see his eyes through his helmet, and as you tear filled (e/c) eyes met his you can see sympathy in them.

"You're ______, aren't you..." He said softly. You weakly nod, moving away from him. "Shhh, it's OK. I'm not here to hurt you." He softly assured you, removing his gauntlets. As he did so, he continued to speak. "Your father talked about you constantly. Said you were a very strong girl" He extended his uncovered hands to you now and spoke very softly, "Come here."

You hesitantly crawled over to the man, sitting in front of him. He placed his hands under your arms and lifted you up as he stood. It was uncomfortable to be held against armor but you were used to it. He carried you back to your home where the Slayers were waiting.

They take noticed to you and seem to lower their heads in sympathy. You look down and see a line of five cloth covered things. You knew what they were though and quickly turned your head away from them. The man carrying you gently rubbed his hand over your back.

"Better take her to the barracks." One of the Slayers said, leading a few of the remaining horses to the group. "Have one of the servants find a home for her."

"I'll take care of her." The man holding you said, hopping onto one of the horses, placing your in front of him. You held the mane of the horse weakly, your eyes lowering. "Least I can do after all he's done for me..." He glances over at the body before down at you, he gently caresses the top of your head.

"Alright, better get going then." One of the Slayers said, patting the horse you were on. It began to move away from the field and your home but you didn't look back. You just kept staring at your hands, holding onto the horses long mane.

You rode for a few hours before you spoke, quietly, "I want to be a Dragon Slayer..." The man remained silent but you knew he heard you.
